CLIENT: EchoVantage
PROJECT: Research breakdown of updated EchoVantage functionality
MY ROLE: Research, Mockups, Prototyping, User Interviews, Documentation
EchoVantage is a cloud-based behavioral health record (EHR) software that offers tools for clinical, billing, and administrative needs such as treatment planning, customizable forms, portal and appointment reminders, and state reporting.
BACKGROUND
Working with EchoVantage, I was tasked with creating a set of new dispensing workflows for MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment). MAT is a critical approach in the management of substance use disorders, combining pharmacological and psychosocial interventions.
Efficient dispensing workflows are essential to ensure timely and accurate delivery of MAT medications, which directly impacts treatment outcomes and patient safety. Understanding how these workflows perform from a usability perspective is crucial for identifying areas for improvement and optimizing the overall treatment process.
research purpose
- To analyze the current dispensing workflows used in MAT settings. This includes examining each step of the dispensing process, from dispensing doses to end of day procedures with medication.
- To better understand users’ expectations and needs when performing a variety of dispensing tasks.
research goal
By focusing on the usability of dispensing workflows for MAT, this study aims to contribute to the refinement of processes that are vital to the success of MAT programs. Improving the usability of these workflows will support healthcare professionals in delivering more effective and efficient treatment, ultimately benefiting both nurses and patients undergoing MAT.

Research Plan
- Recruitment done through User Interview and will focus on gaining participants who work in healthcare and are responsible for dispensing medication.
- Unmoderated sessions will be set up through Maze, emailed to participants, and will consist of three different sections:
- Users will be asked preliminary questions about their position and daily tasks
- Users will then be taken through the prototype
- Users will finish by answering follow-up questions about their experience
prototype tasks – client search
Users are asked to search for a client named Glenn Hines.
prototype tasks – dosing medication
Users are asked to select doses from January 1-4 and then dispense the doses.
prototype tasks – client queue
Users are asked to open the client queue and call Ryan Walters to their window.
prototype tasks – transfer bottle contents
Users are asked transfer to the contents of their current bottle, 202, to a new bottle, 203.
prototype tasks – start of day procedures
Users are asked to select bottle 202, assign it to window 2, and then empty the solution.
prototype tasks – end of day procedures
Users are asked to unassign the medication and then empty the medication.
